All right. I'm late with this...but between work and catching up elsewhere I haven't had time to post this recap. I hope those of you who are watching still will forgive me
Otakon 2012 - The Good, The Bad, and The Awesome!THURSDAY
We did indeed mosey on down to Baltimore, as planned. Unfortunately, complications with our hotelmates made for a very late, and slightly stressful night. Also, finding parking got to be obnoxious, and we ended up parking pretty far away from our hotel. Pretty far being, over 7 blocks. And with our 'let's not keep all of our stuff in our room' plan, it made for a few exhausting and rather annoying (annoying because some people in Baltimore clearly need to learn to keep their sexist opinions to themselves) walks up and down the streets at random hours. We did get our badges with minimal hassle, and the worst two things that happened were the aforementioned fiasco with our hotelmates, and then the random storm. Thankfully for the second, we ducked into the Hyatt and just stayed in the lobby until we were able to go to our actual hotel.
No cosplays, but I'm rather thankful for that. It was nice to spend time solely with
FRIDAY
We ended up staying up super late (as in, til 4am...again) to help one of my best friends finish up a cosplay. We were rudely woken up by our hotelmates at around 8am, though I don't think we actually MOVED very much until around 10am. I got dressed in China cosplay, while
went as Germany. We went to the Hetalia photoshoot and both got in our specific country's shoots, but then left early because she wasn't feeling well. The photoshoot wasn't that much fun either, thanks to being shoved on the fourth floor in the corner and the main photographer's clear hatred of the Homestuck people sitting not very far away from us. I'm not a Homestuck fan myself, but I felt it was really jerkish of him to act the way he did to them.
The original plan was to switch out of China's uniform and go to Orochimaru after the shoot, but a few things didn't work out. I ended up staying in China's outfit until early evening. I then switched to Italy's anime pajama outfit (pink tank top, yellow shorts, black sandals XD). My favorite moment was passing a Denmark on an escalator and having them ask "Why is Italy naked?"
stayed in Germany cosplay, though she too switched into the red boxers/blank tank sleeping clothing. I think we were both just really exhausted though, because we didn't stay out for very long or go to the rave.
We did hit up the Dealer's room though, and I bought all three volumes of Hetalia manga.
COSTUMES: China, bedtime North Italy
SATURDAY
Woke up and spent a good chunk of time getting into the Orochimaru makeup and costume. A lot of what ended up working out we had to figure out as we went, since we hadn't gotten to do a test run of the costume before the con. And then, with my two other friends as the other two Sanin, and
as Germany (because I was an idiot and left her Poland wig in the car
) we went to terrorize the masses with our awesomeness.
WE MADE IT INTO SOMEONE'S BLOG, APPARENTLY!
Let me just say, I have never been so thankful for my lower body strength...or my sheer stubbornness. We didn't even get in the elevator to our hotel before people wanted our picture. And once we got to the con down by the fountain areas, we ended up staying in one place for a good 20 or so minutes to get our picture taken...then adding more Naruto cosplayers. Sudden impromptu photoshoot much?
I only look back on it and laugh now, because in leg wrappings doing the equivalent of a horse stance crouch (I'm a short person, shut up random Otakon staffer from the hotel elevator or I'll get your first born *shot, for she would never do that*) that was an AWFUL idea
But then, after breaking for a drink, we got stopped AGAIN...and yet ANOTHER photoshoot commenced. After that, I couldn't stand to be in the leg wrappings anymore, and so we retreated into our hotel room hidden in the Hilton for me to transform from immortal snake man to the ever-bubbly Feliciano, just in time for the Masquerade. We decided to skip the Hetalia photoshoot...because...the photographer was kinda creeping us out, and kind of letting his "WELL IF THOSE HOMESTUCK PEOPLE TRY ANYTHING I WILL GET SECURITY TO THROW THEIR ASSES OUT BADASS I AM YEAH" self on...and it kinda...it kinda ruined it for us. That, and lots of the fans were those younger fans...the ones that make you feel old and out of touch with a fandom you actually know very well.
We went to the Masquerade, and we saw
performing. Now, a lot of the skits were all Party Rock or ballet or dancing, with nary a Hetalia skit in sight. And then, like the Russian boss of Russia cosplayers,
comes 'kol'ing out on stage and does a fantastic job. The audience was really into the entire performance, from the "Aww"s over the lost Liet, to the encouraging clapping to the song. It was one of my favorite skits, not because it was Hetalia or because it was one of my dear friends, but because it was DIFFERENT and was definitely all her.
and I went out to frozen yogurt, and then we decided to call it a night. I think I was just...really upset on the inside about things, and I can't thank her enough for just...putting up with me. She listened to everything, even the stupid things...and she made me feel better every single time. I got a little white flag from another Italy, which made me really happy on top of that.
Oh, and
bought me an Italy flag...and I got a little rubber wristband for Japan. So we had the 'Axis spirit' all with us (she got Russia even
)
COSTUMES: Orochimaru, North Italy (military)
SUNDAY
We decided to forgo the rave again, so I ended up dropping Visual Kei Japan from my costume list. I went as Military Japan, and we ended up playing 'Spot the Homestuck' costume for most of the rest of the con. I guess by that point I was just not feeling up to doing much, since most of the con was fairly disappointing to me.
However, an experience stuck with me that I hope to never forget. I am seriously tearing up just thinking about it.
On our way back to our parking garage, a man stopped me on the street. He asked if I did the 'military thing', which I assumed he meant did I do reenactments or if I was actually in the military. He clarified, asking which military I represented, and I replied my costume was Imperial navy Japan. The man said "Ah, I recognize that. I was over there. I remember it now." I told him I didn't carry around the rising sun flag because I felt it would be 'too much'.
I felt like dying. I felt like crying. I felt like apologizing even though I had nothing to do with it. I was afraid he was going to tell me off for being disrespectful or something awful like that, even though it wasn't my intent.
Instead, to my immense surprise, the man asked me if he could take my picture. He said the uniform was well made, and that he had high respect for me for wearing it and being respectful in it. I thanked him for his tremendous service to our country, and for being so open-minded and understanding. He took my picture, and somewhere, out there in Baltimore or elsewhere, there is a man who served in WWII who has a picture of me as his wallpaper in an imperial navy Japanese uniform. He has no hatred for them, only tremendous pride in his own accomplishments and admiration for those who wear any military uniform and respect it to the highest degree.
I might be taking it too seriously, but I thought I was honestly going to get yelled at, hated for doing something that to me was simply a hobby, but to someone else was life or death. I think he didn't because he knew I understood what wearing a uniform meant, even if I had never served in the armed forces. And to walk around Baltimore, where one of the ships from Pearl Harbor sits in retirement, in such a uniform with both pride for ones country and for the uniform...I guess it made an impression on him as much as he made an impression on me.
I also always try to be respectful when I wear the Hetalia military uniforms, knowing that some of them are truly very controversial. But a piece of clothing is a piece of clothing, and the individual wearing it makes it a symbol of respect or of hatred.
To wherever you are, I only regret not taking your picture too for the impression you left with me. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart...again for so many things I cannot put into words.
Costumes: Military Japan.
SUMMARY
Though the con might not have been the best, there were definitely moments I loved and adored. Sorry this is so long, but I felt there was quite a lot to say. If you happened to glimpse me there, or thought you saw me, or think I saw you, feel free to post. I'll be following up with pictures probably sometime this week.
